When Mali M. Baum arrived in Germany over a decade ago, she didn’t just bring her family; she brought a vision. Originally from Israel, Mali had already built an impressive career across Tel Aviv, the U.S., and Asia. Drawn to Berlin by a mix of family ties and a keen sense of opportunity, she saw what she calls a “blue ocean”—untapped potential to transform Germany’s start-up and tech landscape. This vision eventually led her to found WLOUNGE, an organization that has become a beacon for innovation and inclusivity in Germany’s tech ecosystem.
Today, Mali is a powerhouse in the European tech community, admired not just for her business acumen but for her commitment to creating meaningful change. As a serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and advisor to the European Commission, she has made it her mission to foster an inclusive environment where innovation thrives and diverse voices are amplified.

In an interview with Mail M Baum, the serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and advisor to the European Commission explains why she has made it her mission to create an inclusive environment with WLOUNGE in which innovation thrives and diverse voices are heard.
You founded WLOUNGE, an organization that’s made waves in Germany’s tech ecosystem. Was there a specific moment that sparked the idea?
Mali Baum"It was definitely a process rather than a single moment. I didn’t do it alone; there were many incredible people who contributed along the way. The concept for WLOUNGE grew from my work with companies in the U.S., where I experienced the value of strong, supportive networks. Today, WLOUNGE has evolved into something different for each participant. For women, it’s a network that transforms careers; for corporates, it’s an innovation hub; and for start-ups, it’s a launchpad. Our foundation is built on values like ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), social impact, and economic empowerment, especially for women. But at its core, WLOUNGE is about building something bigger than ourselves.
Would you say you brought an “American Dream” style of thinking to Germany?
Mali Baum: I’d say it’s more like a “curated dream” that suits Germany’s potential. I wanted to create a space where ambitious people—regardless of gender, age, or background—can achieve their maximum potential. It’s not necessarily the “American Dream” but more of a dream for overachievers who want to do meaningful work.

One skill that’s essential for female founders?
“Determination — go for it, no matter what.”
With WLOUNGE you have created a huge ecosystem that includes investors, political figures, and business leaders. What was your vision in the beginning?
Mali Baum: "The Tech Awards Gala is a carefully curated, impactful event that brings together the most important players in technology, business and politics. It's not a 'festival' for the masses; it's designed for those who really want to make a difference. Every year we have a theme—this year it's 'Raise Your Voice. Make it Big.' We bring together top investors, leaders and innovative start-ups. Our audience is hand-picked, and even the seating is strategically planned to maximize valuable connections. Since its inception, the companies featured at the gala have raised a total of over €400 million. It's a place where real business is done."
Is a different approach needed to support female founders?
Mali Baum: "Absolutely. Female founders often need more hands-on guidance, confidence building, and visibility. That’s why we put them on stage, give them a voice, and connect them with the right people. Success isn’t just about having a great product or business model; it’s about having the confidence to lead and grow. We work with both men and women, but we know that women, especially, benefit from this tailored support. We’re not just creating networking events; we’re fostering a supportive ecosystem.
Your personal role model?
"A mix of Elon Musk and Victoria Beckham—someone with big dreams and resilience, but also a strong sense of authenticity."
You’re a mother, a businesswoman, working with the European Commission, among other roles. How do you manage to balance all these responsibilities?
Mali Baum: To be honest, “balance” is a bit of a myth! It’s not easy, and it comes with sacrifices, and not everyone is willing to pay that price. But for me, it’s worth it. I set clear priorities and help my family understand the importance of my work. As I've gotten older, I’ve learned that finding time to recharge is essential —whether it’s a hobby or time for yourself. I make sure to have one day a week where I disconnect completely. I had mentors along the way who taught me the importance of self-care, and I’ve come to realize that maintaining energy is essential for sustaining this kind of work.
A mantra that motivates you?
“Gratitude, for everything, even the difficult lessons.”
Speaking of support for women, you also co-developed the European Women Leadership Program with the European Commission. Can you tell us more about it?
Mali Baum: As a board member with the European Innovation Council (EIC), I work to support innovation across Europe by selecting promising start-ups, connecting them with resources, and promoting impactful projects. Through the EIC, we help bring companies into the German market and open doors for growth. This role also gives me insights into Germany's position in the global tech scene. Recently, I’ve focused on building stronger public-private partnerships to enhance access to funding and international opportunities, driving growth and scale for European start-ups.

With the German economy facing challenges, do you think looking internationally is the right move?
Mali Baum: "There is no other choice. Innovation and economic growth require a global mindset. Germany has some of the best resources and industries in the world, but it needs to become more adaptable and open to change. Working internationally is essential if we want to remain competitive. At WLOUNGE, we actively support this by connecting start-ups and companies with global partners and giving them access to markets and financing opportunities beyond Germany."
Finally, what’s next for WLOUNGE? What can we expect in the future?
Mali Baum: There’s no other choice. Innovation and economic growth depend on a global mindset. Germany has some of the world’s best resources and industries, but it needs to be more adaptable and open to change. Working internationally is essential if we want to remain competitive. At WLOUNGE, we’re actively supporting this by connecting start-ups and corporates with global partners, helping them access markets and funding beyond Germany.
Thank you for the interview, Mali Baum.
