She is a thought leader when it comes to the topic sustainable design London-based biodesigner Leksi Kostur is a pioneer in an industry that is gaining more and more attention with her interdisciplinary approach. The work of her and her agency re:right design, which operates at the intersection of design, social sciences and material sciences, aims to address the pressing problems of our time and find innovative solutions that are made for people but also keep nature in mind.
From environmental protection to industrial design
Leksi Kostur's passion for nature is rooted in her childhood in the Northwest, where she spent a lot of time hiking, camping and exploring the wilderness with her family. These experiences inspired her commitment to the environmental protection and shaped their appreciation for the preservation of natural resources.
She used her time as a student to combine her awareness of social and environmental issues with her design skills. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Anthropology and a Master's degree in Industrial Design from the world-famous Central Saint Martins College in London, Leksi Kostur has an academic foundation that enables her to find design solutions to the challenges of our time.

The mission of Leksi Kostur
With her agency re:right design, which she founded together with the British designer and carpenter Simon Carroll, Leksi Kostur creates biodegradable installations that inspire people and protect nature. The guiding principles behind the designs are the principles of circular economy and biomimicry, the principle of learning from nature when developing design and technical solutions. The vision of re:right design is to move the global creative industry towards a sustainable transformation and to take a pioneering role in this. To this end, Leksi Kostur and her team transfer innovative Biomaterials Science from the laboratory into real applications. This creates sustainable, ethical and innovative solutions that ecologically expand creative scope.
She brings biomaterials to the big stage
This year, visitors to the legendary Glastonbury Festival were able to admire Leksi Kostur's sustainable event design. For the second time, the designer and her team have designed the "Hayes Pavilion". They developed a demountable structure made of biomaterials such as algae plastic and Mycelium-Insulation panels. When entering the pavilion, festival-goers were not only able to experience the materials themselves, but also learn more about the ecosystems from which they come in appropriate information films.

It makes new flowers bloom
Another of her acclaimed projects is "Continuum" - an ecological burial cocoon made entirely of biomaterials. Given that common burial methods such as cremation and traditional burial contribute to the climate crisis, Leksi Kostur offers an artistic alternative with "Continuum". The body is wrapped in biodegradable garments and buried in a cocoon made of compostable materials. The cocoon has removable wings filled with wildflower seeds. These are placed on the grave after burial and, as the wings decompose, the flowers begin to sprout. The grave site is transformed into a colorful meadow that reflects the cycle of life.
The designer’s work is based on Material experiments in collaboration with her sister Nikolet Kostur, a biomaterials engineer at the Royal College of Art in London. By using natural resources such as Algae, vegetable and mineral pigments, they have created a material that decomposes completely in the soil in just a few weeks.
