Changed requirements require personal development
The world is constantly changing. This also changes the skills that are required to be successful. The World Economic Forum has defined 10 soft skills for 2020 that will be essential for the jobs of the future.
The top 10 capabilities that make 2020 a success
Complex problem solution
human Resource management
Coordination with others
Judgment and decision-making
Comparing the list of top soft skills of 2015 and 2020, it quickly becomes clear: the focus shifts. Creativity is now ranked 10 in place of 3's key skills and completely new to the list were emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility - skills that excel top executives today. Critical thinking has been upgraded in importance, as well as good judgment and decision-making. Negotiation skills, service orientation and the ability to coordinate with others will play an unimportant role in the future. This clearly shows how important personal development, social skills and empathy will be in the future - if you want to be successful, you have to work on yourself and develop new skills.
But why is the focus shifting, what is changing? Automation and Industry 4.0 will soon be a reality - artificial intelligence robots will take over tasks that people have done so far. New technologies will be used wherever they work. Especially in sectors such as industrial manufacturing, but also in trade, support, logistics, construction, gastronomy and agriculture, there will be major changes. Because around 50% of jobs in these industries can be automated. That is why skills and qualities that can not be replaced by technology become more and more important: creativity, emotionality and flexibility are still reserved for us humans and are our capital to succeed in a technologised world.
1. Complex problem solving
Our society is becoming more diverse, networked and more complex than it used to be. So it's not surprising that the ability to solve complex problems is 1! People who are able to survey the big picture and find answers to complex problems are well prepared for the demands of the future.
2. Critical thinking
The time in which executives appreciated yes-sagers and command recipients is long gone. Today, independent and critical thinking counts, because the different perspectives and inputs of the employees are valuable for modern companies. The ability to think critically is evidence of a strong character - an optimal prerequisite for leadership positions.
An absolute core competence for future jobs is creativity. This applies not only to classic creative areas such as advertising or product design, but to all spheres of working life. Anyone who is able to find creative approaches and solutions and bring in new ideas will be more successful than others.
4. human Resource management
Every company depends on the skills of the people who work for it. Smart human resources management not only selects suitable characters, but also maintains a good corporate culture and takes into account the emotions of the employees. Emotional intelligence and social skills are therefore essential here as well.
5. Coordination with others
Teamwork will continue to play a major role in the future. Social competence is crucial for how harmoniously a team works and how efficiently the work can be coordinated.
6. Emotional intelligence
This is the ability to correctly perceive one's own and other's feelings. 2 Emotions have been excluded from professional life for a long time - today the realization prevails that they can also decide success and failure in this sphere of life. Because we always work with people. She and her actions are always subject to the influence of emotions.
7. Judgment and decision-making
Top workers of the future are not afraid to implement creative innovations, take calculated risks and take responsibility. Emotional intelligence plays an important role in communicating decisions in a responsible manner.
8. Service Orientation
Empathy is a basic requirement for this, because service orientation not only means fulfilling expressed wishes, but also foresighted anticipation of these.
9. negotiation skills
2015 was still able to negotiate 5. Nevertheless, it remains important: it is negotiated everywhere where different interests clash - in every collaboration and every business deal.
10. Cognitive flexibility
Cognitive flexibility means being able to apply once acquired knowledge in different situations. These flexibilities can include expertise as well as social skills or negotiating skills.
