In 2019, the big Bauhaus anniversary is celebrated in style: experimental, multi-faceted, transnational and radically contemporary
In 1919, the architect Walter Gropius founded Bauhaus as an internationally oriented university for design in Weimar. The experimenting and designing in workshops was at the heart of the designer training, whereby the separation of practical work and theoretical teaching was emphasized.
The Bauhaus in Weimar - a meeting place for international art & avant-garde
In order to ensure the best possible education for talented students, Gropius employed a number of well-known artists. Along with Johannes Itten, Lyonel Feininger and Gerhard Marcks, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy taught at the Bauhaus.
Due to political financing problems, the Bauhaus left its founding city in 1925 and moved to the up-and-coming industrial city of Dessau. Here, the new slogan of "Art and Technology - a New Unity" came to full effect. From there on, it was less about individual artistic work, but about the design of well-drafted everyday products.
Upon the recommendation of Gropius, the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe became the last Bauhaus director. He was all about one thing:
Architecture and its aesthetics - regardless of any art-theoretical or social-political circumlocutions

For one semester, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe tried to continue the Bauhaus as a private institution in an old telephone factory in Berlin-Steglitz. However, in April 1933, the Nazis dissolved the modern artist's place.
Even though the school was put to an end, its ideas were not: Many Bauhaus members went into exile and contributed - in addition to international students from 29 countries - to the spread of the Bauhaus teaching throughout the world. Successor institutions like the New Bauhaus in Chicago, the Black Mountain College in the woods of North Carolina, the White City in Tel Aviv and the New York MomA were all inspired by the traditional teaching of Bauhaus.
