The art of candle casting is a centuries-old craft that continues to fascinate in the modern world. Using a variety of techniques and materials, you can create candles that reflect your own style while providing a sustainable alternative to industrially manufactured candles. Candle casting not only requires environmentally friendly materials, but also a thoughtful approach to ensure a successful and safe manufacturing process.

What do you need? - The most important ingredients

Candle casting is a special craft, but one that can be easily learned with a little practice and mindfulness.

At the beginning it is important to prepare all the necessary materials and an appropriate working environment. Selecting the right and sustainable materials and creating a suitable environment contribute significantly to a successful and safe manufacturing process.

  • Wax: Choose between depending on your preferences Soy wax, beeswax, coconut oil or rapeseed wax. Make sure you use high-quality wax that is suitable for candle making and that it is environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
  • Wick: Use wicks made from cotton, wood, or natural hemp. Make sure the wick is the right size for your candle shape.
  • Containers/molds: Choose containers or molds that allow you to shape your candle and are heat-resistant. Old disposable glasses are particularly suitable for this and are saved from the trash.
  • Melting vessel: Use a melting vessel or pot designed to melt the wax. Control the temperature of the wax to avoid overheating.
  • Dyes and essential oils (optional): For colored or scented candles, natural dyes and pure essential oils can be added.

  • Workspace: Protect the work surface from dirt. Old newspapers or special documents are suitable for this.
  • Prepare wax: Measure out the amount of wax needed for your candle.
  • Prepare wick: Cut the wick to the appropriate length and attach it to the candle container or mold. This can be done with a wick holder, a clothespin or a wooden skewer. This means the wick stays in the desired location during watering.
  • Prepare melting vessel: Make sure that the container is completely cleaned so that there are no unwanted residues floating in the wax later. Add the wax to the melting vessel.

Pouring candles instructions: This is how it works

After the preparation of the materials and the work area has been completed, the candle casting can begin:

  1. Begin to slowly heat the selected wax in the melting vessel. It is important to only increase the temperature in small steps. This prevents the wax from overheating and avoids fire hazards.
  2. As soon as the wax is liquid, it can be carefully poured into the prepared mold. If the wick slips, it can be carefully straightened while the wax is still liquid.
  3. It is advisable to do the candle pouring in a quiet place to ensure that the candle can harden evenly and without disturbance. The curing process may take a few hours depending on the size and type of candle.

The variety of shapes and designs that can be achieved through different casting techniques and containers opens up numerous creative possibilities. Experimenting with different types of wax, colors and scents makes it possible to create unique candles that exactly match your taste and style. Casting candles is not only a fun activity but also an art that brings a warm and welcoming atmosphere to your home. This makes it perfect as a sustainable and creative hobby.

Make scented candles with the help of essential oils

Making scented candles in do-it-yourself style opens up fascinating opportunities to enrich your home with pleasant aromas. Essential oils are the key component for this special appeal. Start by selecting high-quality, natural, pleasantly scented essential oils. Make sure these are suitable for candle making.

The selection of essential oils should be made based on the desired scent experience. From soothing lavender and refreshing lemon to exotic sandalwood or aromatic cinnamon, there are numerous options available to develop unique scent creations.

Instructions: Add essential oil

The essential oils should be added carefully and shortly before pouring the melted wax. This procedure ensures that the scent is evenly distributed throughout the candle. It is important to use the right amount to get a pleasant but not overwhelming scent. The exact amount depends on the amount of wax melted. A rule of thumb is to use around 30 to 40 drops of essential oil for every 500 grams of wax. However, this amount can vary depending on personal preference.

Make DIY candles from leftover wax

Reusing leftover wax is an eco-friendly way to create new candles while reducing waste. To make candles from old leftover wax, first collect the leftover pieces of candles that have already been used. These wax residues are then melted down to cast new candles.

Creating candles from leftover wax allows for a certain amount of creative freedom as different colors and types of wax can be mixed. This method not only helps reduce waste, but also allows for the creation of unique candles. Reusing leftover wax is an environmentally friendly method of candle making to create custom, handcrafted products.

Instructions: Cast candles from leftover wax

The procedure for making candles from leftover wax is not very different from making them from new wax. During preparation, the wicks and wick holders must be removed from the wax residue before they can be heated. Once the wax has melted, it is advisable to sieve out any foreign objects or residue to ensure a clean final product. The cleaned wax can then be poured into the prepared candle container. It's a good idea to add new wicks to the recycled wax to make fresh candles.
